I recall a summons to South Devon whereby we as a family were instructed to meet at Aveton Gifford at 8am to celebrate Posy's birthday. We were told to bring a picnic, and my old dinghy, affectionately known as The Tub. When we arrived it was to find the entire Stockman family wrestling with the sail of another dinghy that Bart had bought, as well as mothers ancient black inflatable tender.
The destination was downriver to Bantham with the tide, and to stay there for the day, coming back up the river with the next tide. The weather was perfect, one of those stunning English summer days that keep one going throughout the winter months. The two Swallows and Amazons boats, with Wil and Phoebe in the inflatable Nautilus taking up the rear, trundled downriver, to land on a spit of land on the opposite side of the Avon from Bantham. We spent the day there, swimming, sunbathing, attempting to fish, and eating, first a picnic and then a barbeque. As mentioned earlier, everything was packed with precision by Posy, and the food was delicious, washed down with the famous elderflower cordial, something that has been synonymous with visiting the Stockmans since I can remember.
Whenever I think of that day, I think of Richard, Posy and the rest of the Stockman and Kempton clan - Happy, laughing, the conversation covering all topics, it was a prefect day. One I shall treasure forever.
Dear Aunt, your warmth and kindness will be much missed. Rest in Peace
