Happy times with the Montagu Scotts and Stockmans

Created by Rosamond 4 years ago

I first met Posy in the autumn term of 1965, when I lodged with the Montagu Scotts on their farm at Sandhurst, Kent.  They took me 'under their wing' through that cold winter into early summer whilst I was a working pupil at Moat House Riding Establishment.

I had my first experience of the family's legendary parties at Crispin's leaving do at Heronden before his departure to South Africa.  Many more wonderful parties to follow over the years both in Kent and then Devon which Posy organised with great aplomb, creativity and quiet determination!

Posy and I kept in touch during our respective travels in the early '7o's' and met up again in Kent and Devon. In early 1976 when I resumed studies in Kent I was invited to Devon for a weekend with the newly weds at Pool Anthony Drive.  One outing that weekend was to the top of West Dunster lane to look down at their 'proposed' purchase of the cottage.

Later that summer I was invited by Posy to join them and a friend of Richard's, Ashley Daly, on the good ship 'Nereus' for a sailing holiday to the Isles of Scilly and subsequently Brittany.  Posy had successfully engineered a set up that was initially resisted!  The trip was full of fun and laughter and on our return to St Mawes Posy and I picked up the car whilst the lads sailed Nereus back to Starcross.  Posy had a commitment with the 'Sealed Knot' at Powderham Castle and I was persuaded to join Posy as one of the cavaliers.  We donned our costumes, velvet jacket, britches and plumed hats, mounted our horses and lined up for the charge.  Some riders brandishing swords and the atmosphere building we charged across the park.  Unaware of certain irrigation ditches my horse and one or two others swerved sharply and we found ourselves crawling along and out of one of the ditches, fortunately with only a few cuts and bruises.  Posy came to the rescue leading my horse and we rode back to the Castle where 'Nanny' sorted me out with a painkiller.  Rejuvenated I went with Posy to meet Richard and Ashley at Starcross and back to the caravan at West Dunster followed by a lively party at Powderham Castle.

The rest is history, so very many happy times together over the years with our respective families, with my parents at West Buckland, West Dunster, Patsford and Exmoor.  My dear friend Posy, our memories together and your spirit will live on in us all.
